Having been brought up in a shop, it is no surprise that Yann Thompson now creates graphics for retail environments. Here, he describes how he landed the role of a Junior Graphic Designer at StudioXAG.

First of all, tell me a bit about your role as Junior Graphic Designer at StudioXAG — what does it involve? 

My role varies a lot from assisting with initial research, concept proposals and design development, through to preparing work for print production. The best part about the job is jumping from client to client, and in turn switching up the way you work and design.   

What did you study at university, and why?

I studied Graphic and Media Design at London College of Communication. I chose graphic design because I’ve always been passionate about all of the parts that go into creating a great image — such as colour, pattern, layout and conveying a message. I was always interested in art but didn’t really enjoy the inward facing side of it, I wanted to create work that could speak to anyone.

Following this, why did you choose to then join a retail design agency? What opportunities does this bring that other agencies might not?

Retail has always been a big part of my life, I was literally brought up in a shop! It's always been in the front of my mind.

For me, what stands out about being a graphic designer for retail is the final outcome; there’s such an amazing sense of satisfaction, mixed with relief, that what you thought of or were playing around with on the screen became something real and tangible, with which you can see people interact.

On top that, working for an agency really makes each day different, and challenges you to be creative and versatile. 

You interned at StudioXAG for five months before joining as a Junior Graphic Designer. What did you gain from this experience, and what do you perceive the value of internships to be?

I learnt so much! Working at an agency is so different from what you experience at university. Coming from a course that was heavily geared towards concept and communication, learning to apply these skills to the real world was definitely an adjustment.

I think it’s so important for students to get industry experience before finishing university because there’s so much more to the design industry — learning to be more collaborative within your own team, as well as the client's team, resulting in a design that meets priorities as well as your own creative outlook.

What’s the best professional advice you have been offered in your career so far, which you can share with young creatives hoping to follow in your footsteps?

Be nice, fun and a good colleague. In my experience, getting along with people will get you far. Of course, being good at what you do is important, but when the industry is so saturated with talented people, being someone that people want to work with gives you that extra edge.
