On the evening of 17 September, we took to the iconic Barbican Centre to celebrate those commended in this year's YCN Student Awards.

In the first event of our new student-centered programme, New Now, we welcomed tutors, students, sponsors and guests to the stylish surrounds of London's Barbican Centre to celebrate those commended in this years' Student Awards.

To a backdrop of jazz from The Apple Jacks Band, the evening began with speeches and wooden bars presented in the Barbican's opulent underground cinema. Between collecting their awards on stage, students heard from our distinguished speakers – And Rising’s Anna Carpen, Dorcas Brown and Ciara Phelan of Grand Matter, and Koto’s James Greenfield – who imparted their wisdom and spoke candidly about what they've learnt on their journeys so far.

YCN’s Director, Nick Defty, then awarded UAL Chelsea College of Arts’ Judzia Wynn the title of Student of the Year, and presented her the YCN concrete bar for her thought-provoking campaign for Action on Hearing Loss.

Following the ceremony, everyone moved upstairs to continue the celebrations in the Barbican's luscious Garden Rooms and Conservatory, and enjoy an exhibition of all this year's Commended work.

Many thanks too to David Townhill and Sam Bush for the photographs below. The coming YCN Student Awards annual will be published later this year, showcasing all Commended work in full colour glory.
